A Little Can Become a Lot

“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are these for so many people?”

John 6:9 (NASB)

We have all found ourselves, at one time or another, in a situation where we have been overwhelmed by circumstances, where we have found ourselves short of means and resources and where we have asked ourselves, “Is what I have enough for me in this circumstance?” The disciples of Jesus, especially Peter, became concerned when they realized that the crowd listening to Jesus’ teaching needed something to eat because no one had eaten for hours.

For the disciples, the best solution would have been to let the crowd go. I think the reason the disciples had this idea was because they themselves were hungry, so they used wise language. However, they forgot that they were with the Lord of all things. Andrew demonstrated his faith when he came to Jesus to present to him the little boy who had five barley loaves and two small fish. But even with his faith, he did not expect to see such a multiplication. The disciples discovered that a little can become a lot when God is involved.

You might ask, “What does this have to do with my situation?” God doesn’t ask you to see what He will do with what you have. He asks you to come with what you have and let Him do the rest. Andrew simply knew that Jesus could do something without thinking or guessing that it would be a multiplication of what the little boy had available: five barley loaves and two small fish. Come to God with the little you have and have faith that He will make it become much.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
