You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
Matthew 5:13 (NIV)
At a men’s retreat centered on Matthew 5:13, I asked the question, “How does the world around you perceive you as a Christian?” I was astounded to hear every man in the room respond negatively. Some of them don’t talk about their Christian faith. Others don’t let others notice who they really are. Still others said they just go with the flow. If the group was talking about God, they talked about it, but if the topic was different, they just went with the flow. The worst part was that they were all proud to say it.
This is a very sad reality we live in today. Many professing Christians forget who they are and ignore Jesus’ teaching that we are the salt of the earth. They go about their daily lives without anyone having any idea of their Christian faith. What should be a tragic situation becomes normal. When Jesus says we are the salt of the earth, He is not saying that we should go preaching on every street corner to prove our faith. What He is saying is that by our attitude, we are to be representatives of the kingdom in the world.
By accepting Jesus as your Savior, you qualify to be the salt of the earth wherever you go. It is therefore imperative that you influence those around you every day. Paul emphasizes this so well when he says that we are to take advantage of every opportunity, good or bad, to encourage, exhort, I would even say preach the good news. Do your best to preach by your attitude and to convince by words that prove your faith in Christ.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
