So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.”
2 Samuel 9:7 (NKJV)
Making promises today is easy, but keeping them is another matter. The relationship between David and Jonathan was so deep and sincere that Jonathan chose to protect David from Saul, his father, who sought to kill him so that he would not lose the throne. Jonathan knew that he would not inherit the throne since God had anointed David to succeed Saul. But, instead of supporting his father in his quest to kill David, he preferred to consider his friendship with the one who would replace him on the royal throne.
The two friends promised each other that if one of them died, the other would take care of his descendants. Long after his kingdom was established and his kingship was in peace, David remembered the promise he had made to his deceased friend. One day, he asked if there was anyone left of the house of Saul who would do good for Jonathan’s sake. The reason for his kindness was the memory of his friend. When David learned that Jonathan had left a son behind, he immediately sent for him.
I imagine that when Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, saw the chariots of the king’s army approaching, he knew that the day of his death had arrived. Now, it was the day when he would begin to enjoy the result of his father’s sincere friendship with a friend. He was afraid in the presence of the king, but David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake” Have you ever made a promise to a friend in the past, but life’s circumstances separated you? It is time to remember it and keep it. It will be a tangible proof of your integrity.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
