Discipline and Consolation

For thus said the Lord of hosts, after His glory sent me to the nations who plundered you, for he who touches you touches the apple of His eye.

Zechariah 2:8 (ESV)

After disobeying his father who forbade him to go to bars late at night with his friends, a young boy received a punishment he did not expect. Disapproving of his father's decision, he decided to prove that he was wrong and that it was out of lack of love that he had inflicted this punishment on him. For this, his father decided to whip him severely.

His father whipped him out of concern for discipline and correction. While he was trying to escape from his father, the young boy received a whip on the cheek. Immediately, the father dropped his whip and took his son in his arms to console him and reason with him so as not to have to whip him again for the same thing. He showed him his love without neglecting the importance of discipline in their relationship. It is this same example of God's love for his people that the prophet Zechariah gives us in this passage.

After their return from captivity in Babylon, the prophet invited the people to repent and renew their love for God by obeying His laws, because each of them was important to God. They were like the apple of His eye. This father did not hesitate to punish his son to correct him and at the same time prove His love to him, this is how God acts towards His children in His relationship with them. If God punishes you, it does not mean that He will abandon you, He will also comfort you when the time comes.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
