God’s Requirements

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8 (NIV)

We all go to church for two reasons. First, we go to worship, praise, and pray to God. Second, we go to church to fellowship with other believers. In fact, this is one of the things the Bible teaches us, fellowship. When it comes to prayer, we pour all our cares and requests onto God. When we listen to the preaching, we all expect God to reveal something new to us for our lives.

In spite of all these consecrations and devotions, we still neglect the most important thing in our relationship with God. Few of us really think about it: “What does God require of us?” In our desire to receive from God, we forget that He also has His requirements to which He wants us to submit with joy. Micah understood the importance of this aspect in our worship of God. He reveals to us in his answer that asking and waiting for God is not enough; we must also meet His requirements.

Micah has a unique way of presenting God’s complaints. They come in the form of a combination of questions and answers. He asks questions and gives answers. After laying out all that God has done in the previous verses, in verse 8 he describes God’s requirements for the people of Israel. He gives a three-part answer: (1) to do what is right, (2) to love mercy, and (3) to walk humbly before God. Since God never changes, His requirements never change either. So if you want to please God, submit to these three requirements and He will make your paths straight before you.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
