Therefore you shall be perfect, justas your Father in heaven is perfect.
Matthew 5:48 (NKJV)
Some Christians often wonder how or what to do to grow in a personal relationship with God.
They think that God is invisible, how are they going to be able to maintain such a relationship or, they believe, for many of them, that they are not holy enough to reach this level. Most often, what causes such a thought is a lack of knowledge. They hear of David that he was the man after God's own heart; of Moses, that he walked in obedience to the voice of God; of the prophet Elisha, that he had divine anointing. A fact that leads them to believe that these men were all spirit-filled, flawless, and unblemished superheroes. They do not want to believe that these men were sinners like thems, that they had nothing holy about them and that they were simply serving the cause of God despite their sinful nature.
I don't know if you are one of them, but let me tell you that the relationship with God is not based on you being holy and spotless, but rather on your faith in His son and your obedience to His word. It is this relationship with Him that will make you perfect and holy, despite your sins, for He Himself is holy and He declares you holy.
