Greater Works

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

John 14:12 (NKJV)

To do the same works that Jesus did, you must believe in Him. This means that if you are a member of a church without believing in the person of Jesus and His sacrificial work, you will face the truth of John 15:5 which says, “…without Me you can do nothing.” But, if we believe in Jesus and have faith in Him, we will be qualified not only to do the same works that He did, but He will also equip us to do greater works than He did.

The use of the plural form in “greater works” is really important. It means that not only will we do the same works that Jesus did, but we will do even greater works than He did. Jesus gave us several examples of the first step in doing greater works. Matthew 5 gives us one. “…But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Verse 44) – “…If you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors doing that?” (Verse 46) [Read the whole chapter for a bette understanding.]

It’s not just about preaching and sharing the word. Even Satan can use people to preach and teach in order to deceive the church. He can even manipulate you by using others to praise your faith, gift, and accomplishments without you knowing that it’s a trick on his part to get you to be proud in order to discredit you spiritually. If your attitude and life glorify God and edify His people, it’s a sure sign that you’re doing the works that Jesus did. It’s the result of that attitude that will qualify you to do greater works than Christ.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
