For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they do not make you useless nor unproductive in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 1:8 (NASB)
Where many Christians fail is in believing in their own spirituality. They limit God to their spiritual emotion and the satisfaction of their physical need. To talk about God, they only use verses or passages that they have memorized over time, but they do not know God Himself because they have never had a personal experience with Him.
This is exactly what Peter is trying to bring out in this passage. It clearly explains what the Christian must develop to know God better. By idle, Peter means someone who does not grow, who does not progress spiritually. By barren he means one who bears no fruit. However, the Christians I mentioned above, despite their idleness and spiritual sterility, mistakenly believe that no one can surpass them in spirituality.
Notice that the first thing Peter refers to is faith. Faith in Jesus Christ is what distinguishes us from others who reject him and it is through it that we can develop the points cited in verses 5 to 7. Do not let yourself be discouraged by the situations of life, grow in faith, ask for help from the Holy Spirit when needed. If you can add patience and everything else to your faith, you will know Christ as He wants you to know Him.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
