Living in Contentment

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.

Philippians 4:11 (NIV)

Is it easy to be content with what you have? This is a question that can be answered in different ways, depending on each person’s situation, their way of thinking, and their faith in God. One interpretation that will always come up is resignation. Most people will see contentment as resigning themselves to the life they live because they have no choice.

Considering Paul’s position, the word contentment does not convey resignation but rather living with what you have without going to excess to please others or feeling belittled in comparison to them. Such an attitude will lead to low self-esteem. Paul teaches the Philippians to be content with what they have, whether it is abundance or insufficiency. His teaching well understood will prevent us from envying others for what they have, and will encourage us to give glory to God in the midst of difficulties.

Are you living in a situation of insufficiency that leads you to question your life or your future? I will not tell you to accept it because it is what God wants for you, but I will say that it is a stage of your life that you must use to grow in faith and in a personal relationship with God. Nothing says that God does not test you. Remember the story of Job. He had not resigned himself to his situation, but having confidence in God, he cried out: "The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away, may the name of the Lord be blessed. Like Job, tell yourself that this is the right time for you to activate your faith in God.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
