Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.
Titus 3:14 (NIV)
Speaking a Christian congregation, what Paul means by "Doing What is Good" is providing financial assistance and giving useful things for the needs of the Church. Although he does not mention it directly, we can understand it by the use of the expression “Urgent Needs” used in the plural. These needs can be of all kinds. The reality of our churches today can give us a precise idea of what these needs may be.
Doing good in this verse has more of a sense of continuity. This means that Christians must always think of the poor, the orphans, the widows, the parents who cannot pay for their children's education. However, your support should not be limited to just the members of your church, it can also extend to non-believers, which is evidence of your faith in Christ. Who knows, the Holy Spirit might use your action to bring them to repentance.
You must understand today that helping others and the Church has always been a necessity in God's eyes, otherwise He would not have allowed this instruction to be recorded in His word. So I encourage you to apply Paul's exhortation to your life by practicing good works for the advancement of your church.
May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
