The Secret of Being Content

I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

Philippians 4:12 (NKJV)

What Paul is saying in this verse is that he has learned the secret of being content in all situations. The joy he feels in the midst of his situation is not dependent on circumstances. Like him, we should not be controlled by the circumstances of our lives. He says he is content in whatever situation he finds himself in because he knows the Lord will provide for his needs no matter what. If we take a moment to think about what is going on in this world, we can see that many of us struggle to be content in our daily lives. As Christians, the Bible calls us to be content with what the Lord provides.

One of the most important things we should learn as Christians is to be content with what we have. We will have times in our lives when we have plenty and times when we lack everything. Our discouragement in these times of lack does not reflect the character of God. God’s character is revealed in our endurance and our attitude of being content because of our trust in Him. Don’t be moved by your circumstances. Be content in God. He will provide for all your needs.

The secret to being content is not something we are born with, but it is rooted in our relationship with Jesus Christ. The more we understand God’s Word and the more time we spend with Him, the better we understand how to deal with life’s circumstances. No matter what situation you are currently going through in life, I am sure there are things around you that give you reasons to be unhappy, but do yourself a favor, follow Paul’s example, take your eyes off the circumstances of your life and look instead to Christ. With Him nothing is impossible, you can do all things.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
