The Spring of Living Water

Two evils My people have done: they have forsaken Me, the source of living waters; They have dug themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

Jeremiah 2:13 (NABRE)

In the New Testament, we see Jesus reveal Himself as the only source of living water capable of quenching our thirst, the one we can turn to at any time of our lives. Some accept this truth with joy while others reject it outright and turn to other sources that will never quench their thirst or fulfill their needs.

In Jeremiah's day, God was complaining that many Israelites were turning away from Him, the only true God who could care for them, and were turning to pagan gods. They immersed themselves in religious rites and pagan sacrifices to satisfy their needs which were never satisfied. God used Jeremiah to remind them of who He is to them, the source of living water.

When we study the Old Testament and understand God's relationship with Israel, we will find that the situation was never different from today. There are always those who seek God with all their heart and those who turn away from Him to seek refuge with other gods who cannot quench their thirst. They simply dig empty citerns. Don't be one of them, come to Jesus and drink of His living water, for with Him you will never thirst.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
