Walk Wisely

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,

Ephesians 5:15 (RSV)

As Christians, we cannot live as we please, even if it makes us comfortable. We often pretend that God is omniscient enough to understand our human weaknesses and tendencies to forgive us. This is a grave mistake on our part, because His omniscience and compassion do not allow Him to accept our evil ways. It is moreover to avoid them that He gave us His word.

What Paul means by walking circumspectly is being careful about how we walk, our attitude, and our behavior. This is what will show those who look at us from inside or outside the Church who we really are. Through his exhortation, he asks us to change our lifestyle habits at times. I like the conclusion he gives to this verse, "redeem the time, for the days are evil."

This verse should be understood and viewed with great respect, as it not only relates to who we are in Christ but also to the influence we have on others. How can we exhort, rebuke and correct others if we ourselves are not good examples in their eyes. Be wise in your attitude and actions, do not let yourself be influenced by evil desires because they will only lead you away from the path of God.

May the grace and peace of God be with you all.
