The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are instructed to know how to sustain the weary with a word. He awakens me each morning; He awakens my ear to listen like those being instructed.
Isaiah 50:4 (HCSB)
I remember one day a friend called me on the phone and asked me to come to his house immediately because he needed me to help his daughter who was suffering from depression and anxiety. I rushed to his house to help. When I entered his daughter’s room, I could clearly see that she was disoriented. She had lost control of her reactions.
I asked her, “Do you know why I am here?” She replied curtly, “Because my father called you to come to my rescue.” Calmly, I added, “Before He was arrested, Jesus called His father to help Him; on the cross, in the midst of His suffering, He called His father again to help Him.” Why are you telling me this, she replied? “If Jesus, who was God, needed His Father in times of crisis, how much more do we as mere humans need to turn to Him for support.”
I believe I placed the right words at the right time. She turned to me and said through tears, “Can you pray with me?” When life’s circumstances assail us and make us anxious, a word of encouragement and comfort is what we need to awaken our spirit and help us seek God’s help. This is exactly what the prophet Isaiah is expressing in this verse when he says that the Lord has given him a tongue trained to succor the weary. God will always place someone in your path to help you through life’s trials.
May God’s grace and peace be with you all.
